Contraceptive implant (Nexplanon) now lasts up to 5 years

The contraceptive implant (Nexplanon) is now licensed for use for up to 5 years in the UK, following updated national guidance.

This change is based on evidence showing the implant remains highly effective and safe for longer than the three year previously advised.

What this means for you:

• If you already have an implant, you may not need to have it replaced after 3 years
• Many people will now be covered for up to 5 years from when it was fitted

If you already have an appointment booked to replace your implant and think you may no longer need it, please cancel your appointment so it can be offered to someone else.
