Epididymo-orchitis infection
Epididimo-orchitis is a common condition which affects only men and is characterised by pain and swelling inside the scrotum (testicles).
The infection can be in either the epididymis (the tube which carries sperm from the testicle to the water pipe) and this is known as epididymitis, or the testicle itself, and this is called orchitis. If the infection is in both areas it is known as epididymo-orchitis.
In men under 35 it is often caused by a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Epididymo-orchitis is easily treated with antibiotics, but the discomfort can take weeks or months to settle.
Partner Notification: Not all cases of Epididymo-orchitis are caused by having sex, but the bacteria can be passed on through sex and therefore any recent sexual partners you may have had will need to be treated.
