People across Derby and Derbyshire can now access free emergency contraception (the ‘morning after pill’) directly from their local community pharmacy, without needing to book an appointment.

This update forms part of the national Pharmacy First expansion, which also includes free consultations and repeat supplies of the oral contraceptive pill. The change aims to make reproductive healthcare quicker, easier and more convenient to access.

Women and people with a cervix of childbearing age – from their first period – can use the service. Those under 16 will be assessed using Fraser Guidelines to ensure they understand the advice and treatment.

Dr Sue Mann, National Clinical Director in Women’s Health at NHS England, described the development as “one of the biggest changes to sexual health services since the 1960s and a game changer in making reproductive healthcare more easily accessible for women.”

Not every pharmacy is yet signed up to deliver the NHS contraception service, so it’s worth checking first.
